Meet the Founder & Editor-in-Chief

Vitaly Ataev Troshin is a California-based journalist and publisher who lives in Searles Valley in the Mojave Desert. For him, rural California is not an abstract category on a map: it is home. He knows the challenges of long distances, limited public transportation and accessing essential services far from major population centers.
California has one of the world's largest economies, yet opportunities and access to transportation, healthcare, public services and reliable local news differ greatly from community to community. California58 Local aims to connect rural and remote places with the rest of the state, while keeping their own stories and identities visible.
Troshin was part of the California Local News Fellowship associated with UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism during 2023–2025. His experience includes community reporting, listening to residents and examining issues that shape daily life. He also founded Russian California (RusCali), a news publication serving California's Russian-speaking communities.
His editorial approach starts with listening to residents, checking facts and public records, and welcoming corrections. Share your community's story with the newsroom →
