JOSHUA TREE NEWS | PARK ACCESS | OCTOBER 2026
Visitors approaching Joshua Tree National Park from the town’s west side faced a temporary route change at the start of 2026. The National Park Service announced a January 12–17 construction closure of the west entrance and six miles of Park Boulevard.
The exact closure window
According to the park’s January 8 announcement, the entrance closure began at 6 a.m. January 12 and was scheduled to end at 7 a.m. January 17. Vehicle access between the west entrance and Quail Springs Picnic Area was interrupted, including the Maze Loop and Bigfoot Trailhead parking areas. The notice is historical; it is not an indication that those dates represent a current October closure.
How visitors were rerouted
During the construction window, the park directed motorists to the north entrance in Twentynine Palms or the Cottonwood entrance farther south. The north entrance sits roughly 25 miles east of the west entrance and could add time to a visit. Travelers also had to consider services, parking and route distances in the surrounding towns.
Why entrance work affects local businesses
The west entrance is an important path for visitors staying, dining and shopping in Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley. Even a few days of changed access may shift traffic patterns and require tour providers to adjust itineraries. The park’s announcement did not present a quantified economic impact, so any such estimate would require separate evidence.
Lessons for future closures
Before traveling, check the park’s road and entrance notices rather than relying on older travel guides. For residents and business owners, noting the exact start and finish of each closure is essential: a short construction notice should not be mistaken for an indefinite shutdown.
