BUELLTON NEWS | ORIGINAL LOCAL REPORT · 2026
Caltrans announced that the Highway 101 pavement rehabilitation project through Buellton would enter a new phase on September 30, 2026, with changes to on- and off-ramp access at State Route 246. The state described the work as part of a roughly $30 million project along approximately ten miles of highway, scheduled to continue into 2027.
What changed on September 30
Caltrans District 5 announced closures of the U.S. 101 northbound off-ramp at Highway 246 and the southbound on-ramp at Highway 246 as crews rebuild pavement and ramps. The state expected these ramps to be closed until early November. At the same time, closures affecting the McMurray Road and Avenue of Flags ramps were to be lifted ahead of the new phase.
Why drivers face more than a brief detour
The work includes replacement of concrete pavement, asphalt overlay, shoulder reconstruction, culvert and drainage repairs, electrical work, guardrails and ramp construction. Caltrans has warned of lane reductions and congestion, particularly during commuter periods. These activities are broader than routine restriping.
What residents and visitors can do
The state advises using Santa Rosa Road exits and Avenue of Flags when following the signed detours. However, route access can change as construction progresses, so old maps and social posts are not authoritative for the current day. Check Caltrans QuickMap and posted construction signs before making trips between the Santa Ynez Valley and nearby communities.
What is still pending
Caltrans projects completion of the overall rehabilitation by March 2027. That is a forecast, not proof of a contract closeout or a guarantee that every temporary closure will end on its originally scheduled day. Buellton News will distinguish planned closure dates from confirmed reopenings.
