AUBURN NEWS | LOCAL DEVELOPMENT AND INFRASTRUCTURE · OCTOBER 2026
Placer County began reviewing plans for a three-story self-storage complex in the unincorporated Auburn area in March 2026. The proposed Foothill Storage development is listed in the state CEQA system with a draft mitigated negative declaration and a public review period running from March 24 through April 23.
What the documents actually say
The proposal calls for a roughly 110,501-square-foot building with 840 storage units on an undeveloped 2.36-acre lot near Bowman Road. The site plan would include 23 parking spaces and use adjacent commercial-center access in addition to connections from Dolores Drive and Terry Lane. Other planned improvements involve fencing, lighting, landscaping, water connections and sewer service.
Why it matters locally
Storage facilities raise questions about construction traffic, neighborhood lighting, visual scale, stormwater handling and how the use fits local commercial planning. The location is listed under the Auburn/Bowman Community Plan and is outside incorporated city jurisdiction, so Placer County—not the City of Auburn—leads this permitting process. Residents should review the land-use map and agency conditions rather than assume the building has approval to begin construction.
What happens next
The March 2026 environmental review is not a record of completed construction or an operating business. Auburn News will monitor the county’s permit decisions, construction conditions and changes to the submitted plans before reporting further milestones.
