ANZA NEWS | ORIGINAL LOCAL NEWS · OCTOBER 2026
A California Energy Commission filing dated August 26, 2026 describes a proposed increase in battery storage supporting Anza Electric Cooperative’s existing 3.4-megawatt solar microgrid in Riverside County. The project is designed to make backup power more useful during extended outages, including for critical community and tribal facilities.
What the public documents establish
The plan would add containerized energy storage equipment and integrate it with the already operating microgrid. The state filing identifies Anza-area member households and the Cahuilla Band of Indians among the communities the cooperative serves. Existing land already used for storage and power equipment would accommodate the new infrastructure.
Why this matters locally
Batteries can store power produced at one time and release it when demand is elevated or grid power is disrupted. That makes resilience the central question for this rural community. But a proposal to increase energy storage does not itself establish that installation is complete, what additional duration of backup is guaranteed, or that every Anza household can remain energized during a widespread outage.
What residents can check next
Residents can ask the cooperative for construction dates, additional usable megawatt-hours, activation and safety plans, and how emergency-power priorities will be communicated. The California Energy Commission’s environmental exemption record covers limited site alterations and equipment placement; it is not a final operating-performance report.
