JUNE LAKE NEWS | ORIGINAL LOCAL NEWS · OCTOBER 2026
A California Sierra Nevada Conservancy funding notice dated June 8, 2026 identifies the June Lake Junction General Store and Gas Station as one location for a self-service watercraft decontamination station. The project aims to reduce the chance that invasive golden mussels will spread into Eastern Sierra lakes.
What the official documents describe
The wider program would support facilities at existing boating access areas within Inyo National Forest, including Lake Mamie picnic and parking area and the Convict Lake boat launch, as well as the June Lake Junction location. The applicant is Mammoth Lakes Recreation. The notice describes installations on already used visitor-service or launch sites rather than a new reservoir or lake expansion.
Why this matters to residents
Golden mussels can travel on boats and equipment and are extremely difficult to remove once established. Decontamination facilities may help visitors clean gear before it reaches vulnerable waters, but equipment is useful only if installed, maintained and correctly used. The state funding record is not evidence that the devices are already operating on a specific date.
What to watch next
June Lake News will follow opening instructions, public locations, user fees if any, and official fish-and-wildlife guidance. Boaters should follow current invasive species regulations and posted local directions; a project proposal does not replace required inspection or cleaning procedures.
