WINTERS NEWS | LOCAL PUBLIC-INTEREST NEWS · OCTOBER 2026
The Yolo County Resource Conservation District filed a June 9, 2026 notice describing work on the Front Country Fuel Break, a strategic corridor at the base of the Inner Coast Range extending between Rumsey and the western Winters area. The project is intended to support firefighter access and slow wildfire movement toward communities.
What the project documents say
The full planned fuel break stretches about 29 miles across multiple properties. The initial work described in the notice concentrates on roughly the first mile near old Highway 16, where invasive grasses and other ground vegetation have grown into the corridor. Crews would clear a band approximately 10 to 15 feet wide using appropriate heavy equipment, while observing buffers around an intermittent stream and a blue elderberry plant.
Why this matters to local residents
Firebreak maintenance can be important in a region that experienced the 2018 County Fire and 2020 LNU Lightning Complex. The goal is to help firefighting operations, not to guarantee that a wildfire cannot cross the corridor or reach homes. The environmental notice also describes coordination with landowners, the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation and biological specialists.
What happens next
Winters News will follow the timeline, actual treated sections, wildlife precautions and later maintenance work. Residents should use CAL FIRE and local emergency agencies for immediate wildfire alerts; this is a long-term preparedness project.
