Los Banos News: City Plans to Transform 11,255-Square-Foot Building into Development Services Center

LOS BANOS NEWS | ORIGINAL COMMUNITY REPORT · OCTOBER 2026

The City of Los Banos filed a September 11, 2026 environmental notice for remodeling an existing building at 535 J Street into a municipal Development Services Center. The project could bring city planning and related public-facing work into a renovated downtown location.

Details from the official project record

According to the city, the plan would renovate and modernize an existing structure of approximately 11,255 square feet on a roughly 0.43-acre parcel between Fifth Street and Sixth Street. The proposed use is a city development-services facility rather than a new shopping complex or expansion into undeveloped land. The city relied on an environmental exemption for existing-facility rehabilitation.

Why this is important locally

Access to planning and building services matters for local residents, contractors and small businesses. A consolidated office could make municipal interactions easier, depending on how services and operating hours are organized. The filing does not establish that the office is already open or that any department has moved.

What to watch next

Los Banos News will follow city remodeling contracts, accessibility improvements and the actual opening date. Readers should continue using the city’s currently published contact locations until officials announce a relocation.
