FELTON, Santa Cruz County — People planning a walk or a bike outing at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park should check current trail conditions before heading out. California State Parks reports that work on Pipeline Road is affecting trail access through October 21, 2026.
The agency says pipeline work is taking place from September 23 to October 21, while the period of trail-access impacts runs from October 7 through October 21. Visitors should expect possible delays, obey posted signs and follow directions from park staff or work-site spotters. The notice does not say the entire state park is closed.

- What the notice means: Potential trail delays or restrictions while pipeline work proceeds. It is not a statement that every trail is shut.
- Current park hours: Sunrise to sunset; visitor center generally 10 a.m.–4 p.m. daily, according to the park’s current visitor information.

Plan around the work, not around assumptions
Henry Cowell is known for its old-growth redwoods, including a 40-acre grove near Felton. Trail choices vary by entrance and location. Rather than assume a particular route is clear, visitors should consult the park map and ask staff about access to their intended trail before setting out.
The official park page identifies multiple vehicle entrances, including day-use, campground and Fall Creek Unit access. These are not necessarily interchangeable for visitors starting a specific hike. Allow extra time to reach the correct entrance.
Dogs are permitted only in designated areas, including select trails, picnic areas and some campsites. Check the restrictions for the route you plan to use.
Where to get updates
California State Parks publishes its active alert on the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park page. The park can also be reached at (831) 335-4598. The posted October 21 date is the current planned end of work; conditions and schedules can change.
What changes for residents and visitors? The practical impact is the possibility of delays when using Pipeline Road. Other park activities continue to be listed, but people should confirm individual trail conditions rather than treating the notice as an all-park closure.
