ORICK, Humboldt County — October 15, 2026. Orick is one of the gateways to Redwood National and State Parks. Visitors arriving on US 101 can see coast redwood forests, coastal beaches and prairie habitat nearby, but a successful trip requires knowing which trails have reservation requirements, where large vehicles cannot go and when visitor centers are open. This local guide brings together current National Park Service information for residents and travelers.

1. Start at Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center

The National Park Service directions locate the Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center on Highway 101 just south of Orick, with exhibits, park information and beach access. It is an efficient first stop for trail condition updates and maps. NPS advises that the center is south of the town, not in central Orick, despite how some digital directions may label it.

The park’s official visitor center schedule lists summer hours through November 1, 2026, and reduced winter hours beginning November 2. Visitor facilities can adjust operating days, so check hours before a long drive.

2. Explore Lady Bird Johnson Grove

Near Bald Hills Road, the Lady Bird Johnson Grove offers a roughly 1.5-mile loop among mature trees. NPS describes it as a family-friendly walk, but notes a sloping pedestrian bridge that prevents it from being classified as fully wheelchair-accessible. The parking lot is limited and unsuitable for RVs or trailers; follow posted parking restrictions.

3. Visit Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park

The Prairie Creek Visitor Center is reached along Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway north of Orick. It is a starting point for trail choices and learning about wildlife. The NPS describes several old-growth redwood routes, including accessible options that vary by trail segment, maintenance and weather conditions. Check current closures and park fees before setting out.

4. Watch Roosevelt elk safely

The Redwood parks are home to wild Roosevelt elk, sometimes visible from designated viewing areas near roads and meadows. NPS visitor guidance warns that elk are unpredictable and may charge when approached. Stay in designated viewing areas, give animals space and never move closer for a photograph. Roadside stopping rules still apply.

5. Plan Tall Trees Grove in advance

Tall Trees Grove is not a spontaneous drive-in stop. The NPS requires a free online Tall Trees Trailhead reservation year-round to access the locked road and parking area. The visit is a substantial commitment: the park estimates about four hours including driving and a 4.5-mile round-trip hike with moderate-to-strenuous grades.

Reservations are made through the NPS-approved online process, not handed out on demand by the visitor center. Some advance and day-before options are available subject to capacity. Verify permit instructions and gate-code delivery before leaving cell service.

Driving, access and seasonal changes

Some forest roads are narrow, steep or unsuitable for trailers and RVs. Winter brings heavy rain, fallen branches and occasional road or trail closures. Plan a shorter outing if you have limited time, small children, mobility constraints or a large vehicle. NPS basic information explains that the federal park generally has no entrance fee, although some state-park day-use areas may charge fees.
