MOUNT HAMILTON, Santa Clara County — Lick Observatory remains open for limited daytime public visits following windstorm damage, but visitors should not assume that every historic building or telescope is accessible.
The observatory’s current visitor guidance says the East Grounds and Shane Telescope Gallery are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It states that the main building and West Peak area remain closed to public access during ongoing repair work following Christmas windstorm damage.
What visitors can see
The open eastern grounds offer broad views toward Silicon Valley and the surrounding ridges. Visitors can explore the Shane Telescope Gallery and learn about astronomy research. The current visitor information also lists restrooms and a water fountain available in the Shane Gallery area.
A gift shop operates from a temporary location in the historic Dining Hall, with posted hours Saturday and Sunday, noon–5 p.m. The observatory says ordinary daytime admission is free, while selected events require tickets. Paid event availability should be checked on the official website before making the drive.
Do not rely on older schedules
Several older University of California observatory pages still describe tours in the main building or different weekly opening days. Those older listings may no longer reflect the repair restrictions. For visits in October 2026, prioritize the visitor center’s repair notice and the observatory’s home page.
Travel safely on Mount Hamilton Road
The observatory is approximately 20 miles east of San José along a steep and winding mountain route. Drivers should leave enough time to return in daylight if unfamiliar with the road, avoid stopping in travel lanes for photography, and expect changing mountain weather. Winter trips can involve snow, ice or closures.
For larger groups, the observatory’s group information recommends advance coordination. Large buses are not recommended on the winding mountain access roads.
