MARKLEEVILLE, Alpine County — Grover Hot Springs State Park is preparing for a seasonal change in camping accommodations. The park’s October 15, 2026 operations notice states that the summer campground closes Friday, October 16, and the picnic area becomes a smaller winter campground.

How winter camping works

State Parks says the winter area has 25 campsites and operates on a first-come, first-served basis without advance reservations until the seasonal arrangement changes. The maximum length for motorhomes or trailers drops to 18 feet, an important restriction for visitors traveling in larger vehicles.

The posted winter nightly fee is $25 for regular visitors or $23 for seniors age 62 and over. The park lists an $8 extra vehicle fee and a maximum of eight people per campsite. Fees and terms can change; verify them when arriving.

What facilities are described?

The winter camping notice lists flush toilets, sinks, water faucets, picnic tables, bear lockers and firepits. State Parks specifically urges winter preparedness: carry tire chains, a snow shovel and supplies suited to freezing mountain conditions.

The park describes the pool complex as open Friday through Monday with tickets sold first come, first served at the park. Because hot-springs facilities can close temporarily for maintenance or weather, check directly before making a special trip.

Location, day use and safety

Grover Hot Springs lies in an alpine meadow several miles west of Markleeville. State Parks lists general day use as sunrise to sunset and the contact number as 530-694-2248.

Dogs are permitted on leash in approved areas but not within the hot-springs pool complex. The park’s official current restrictions should be consulted for any additional limits and closures.

Mountains can change rapidly from sunny to icy conditions. Visitors should confirm roads through Caltrans QuickMap and should not assume that a campground listed as available is suitable for every vehicle or group.
