LA HONDA, San Mateo County — Hiking routes through Pescadero Creek County Park connect residents and visitors with redwood forest and rugged hills near La Honda, but the park has important restrictions that differ from some other Peninsula recreation areas.

San Mateo County’s official trail guide includes routes of varied length and difficulty, with opportunities for day hikes and horseback riding. The county also warns that some online descriptions of individual trails may be incorrect and asks visitors to use its most current park map or brochure.

What activities are restricted?

The county’s park regulations prohibit dogs and other pets, as well as campfires throughout the park. Picking flowers or collecting wood is not permitted. Bicycles are restricted to designated paved areas or service roads rather than every hiking trail, while motor vehicles are limited to established roadways and parking areas.

Horseback riding is allowed only on designated trails. Riders should ask park rangers about seasonal conditions, and visitors cannot assume rental horses are available on site.

Seasonal trail decisions matter

San Mateo County warns that some trails can close during the winter season. Rain and erosion can affect footing, stream crossings and steep slopes, so visitors should check updated notices before beginning a long hike.

The park opens at 8 a.m. and closes at a seasonal posted time before sunset. That means the safe time to start a late-day hike becomes shorter during fall and winter.

How to plan a responsible visit

  • Use the current county trail map, not an old social media screenshot.
  • Confirm restrictions and any winter closures; do not take pets onto trails where dogs are prohibited.
  • Bring adequate water and clothing for cool, shaded forest conditions.
  • Choose a route based on distance, elevation gain and daylight left.
  • Leave natural and historical materials in place.

For La Honda residents, protecting sensitive waterways and forest areas is central to maintaining access to the park. No current trail opening status beyond the published county rules is asserted in this guide.
