STINSON BEACH, Marin County — A sunny October day at Stinson Beach can still attract families and surfers, but visitors should not assume that the same lifeguard coverage and facilities operate as during summer.
According to the National Park Service’s Stinson Beach visitor guide, lifeguards are generally on duty from early July through Labor Day. October is outside that typical schedule. Unless the NPS confirms otherwise for a particular day, visitors should not expect staffed summer lifeguard protection.
Parking fills, and gates have seasonal hours
The NPS says the beach is open year-round and its entrance gates usually open at 9 a.m., with closing hours changing seasonally. Parking areas can fill before noon on busy days, and there are no overflow lots. Cars left beyond closing may be ticketed.
There is no camping at the beach. The park advises drivers to be cautious on the steep, twisting roads approaching Stinson.
Know exactly where dogs are allowed
Under the NPS guidance, leashed dogs may enter parking and picnic areas and some adjacent county-managed beach areas, but dogs are not permitted on the federally managed section of Stinson Beach. Posted on-site boundary signs control visitor behavior.
Ocean hazards don’t end with summer
The park identifies Stinson as its principal swimming beach, but its wider beach safety information warns about rip currents, sneaker waves, cold water and the risk of hypothermia. Families should supervise children closely and follow any posted warnings.
Two beach wheelchairs may be requested through the lifeguard office, according to the NPS accessibility page. Visitors should confirm current availability before arriving.
Marin Transit Route 61 is listed as a transit option, but schedules should be checked directly with the operator for the travel date.
