PINE GROVE, Amador County — Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park preserves a significant cultural landscape in the Sierra foothills, including bedrock mortars and a ceremonial roundhouse that remains important to Native communities.

The park’s California State Parks visitor page lists outdoor day-use access from sunrise to sunset and the Chaw’se Regional Indian Museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The museum is listed as closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Why the site is culturally important

According to State Parks, the site contains one of North America’s largest collections of bedrock mortars — depressions used for processing acorns and other foods — and a large roundhouse that is still used by Native Americans. It is not simply a reconstructed exhibit; the landscape is connected with ongoing cultural traditions.

The park’s visitor information describes a reconstructed Miwok village setting, including bark houses and acorn granaries, along with interpretive museum displays and picnic facilities.

Rules visitors should know

California State Parks limits dogs to paved paths. Visitors should not cross barriers, handle cultural objects, remove plant materials or enter ceremonial areas without permission. Photography may be inappropriate in particular cultural contexts even when general park access is permitted; respect staff guidance and signs.

Preparing for a visit

  • Check the park’s current hours and advisories before traveling.
  • Allow time for both the grounds and museum rather than assuming the museum is open until sunset.
  • For groups and educational visits, contact the park office in advance.
  • Confirm campsite availability and restrictions separately from day-use admission.

State Parks lists its telephone as 209-296-7488. The site offers a local opportunity to learn about California history through an Indigenous perspective while supporting respectful stewardship of an active cultural place.
