SHOSHONE, Inyo County — Drivers entering Death Valley National Park from Shoshone should use the National Park Service’s current road-status map before relying on a normal travel-time estimate. The southern route has hazards that are not always obvious on a navigation screen.

The NPS road status page, updated October 10, 2026, places southern Badwater Road, south of Badwater Basin toward Shoshone, in its caution category. The park describes loose gravel, soft and steep road shoulders, dust, missing pavement markings and sections without pavement following flood damage.

Caution is not the same as a total closure

The road status page distinguishes between road segments listed closed and those listed under caution. Drivers should not share a message claiming that the Shoshone approach is completely closed based solely on a caution notice. Conversely, a road not listed as closed may still require slow driving and substantial care.

The park’s driving directions recognize California State Route 178 from Shoshone as a paved entrance route on the southeastern side of Death Valley. The NPS warns that GPS and other mapping services can direct travelers onto unsuitable or closed roads.

How to plan a safe trip

  • Check the latest NPS road status and its update timestamp immediately before driving.
  • Check Caltrans QuickMap for road conditions outside the park.
  • Carry an offline map, water, fuel and essential supplies appropriate to remote desert travel.
  • Avoid dirt-road shortcuts unless a route is explicitly open and appropriate for your vehicle.
  • Allow extra travel time; soft shoulders and loose gravel can require reduced speeds.

What to see near this entrance

The NPS Ashford Mill historic site is associated with the park’s early mining history. Ruins and old industrial features should be viewed from safe, authorized areas. They are not maintained recreation structures for climbing.

The park’s conditions can change after storms without much warning. This report records the October 10 notice; it does not certify the road’s condition on any future date.
