LOS ALAMOS, Santa Barbara County — One of the important historic properties associated with Los Alamos is a ranch house whose history reaches back to the period before California statehood. It appears in both California’s historic resources records and the federal National Register of Historic Places.

The National Park Service’s National Register record identifies Los Alamos Ranch House, also called Rancho Los Alamos or the De la Guerra ranch house, as listed on April 15, 1970, under the identifier 70000148.

What do the federal records establish?

The property’s areas of historical significance are architecture and exploration or settlement. The National Register document places the property about three miles west of Los Alamos along old U.S. Highway 101 and describes its role in the ranching and transportation history of the Santa Ynez Valley region.

Historic survey material describes a large one-story adobe residence adapted over time, with surviving features and modifications reflecting changes in the rancho’s long history. The historical record connects the property with the De la Guerra family and travelers moving through the region before modern highways.

Does historic status mean visitors may enter?

No. Listing in the National Register recognizes a property’s historic importance; it does not automatically turn a privately owned building into a government-managed museum or grant public access. Visitors should not enter grounds, approach residences or use private drives without permission.

The state’s Los Alamos Ranch House listing corroborates the historic designation and its Santa Barbara County location. Researchers seeking additional detail can request the original National Register materials through NPS archives and the state Office of Historic Preservation.

A place for documented local history

Los Alamos’ architecture and surrounding former ranches offer opportunities to understand the transition from early ranching to modern agricultural and tourism economies. Residents with historical photographs or archival information can contribute to local history, while editors should identify rights and verify dates before publication.
