REDWAY, Humboldt County — Humboldt Redwoods State Park offers one of California’s best-known old-growth forest experiences a drive north of Redway. For residents and visitors, the region’s ancient trees are a reason to explore the park responsibly rather than simply stop for a roadside photo.
The official California State Parks hiking guide describes the Founders Grove Nature Loop as a 0.6-mile self-guided walk, generally taking about half an hour. It starts at the Founders Grove parking area along the Avenue of the Giants, near mile marker 20.5.
What makes this short trail different?
The loop passes towering coast redwoods, including trees named for early conservation advocates, and the fallen Dyerville Giant. The Dyerville Giant fell in 1991; its massive trunk remains part of the forest ecosystem rather than a removed obstacle.
Visitors can learn how old trees support insects, fungi, new growth and nutrient cycling. A fallen redwood is not simply debris: it can continue to provide habitat for many years.
History must be told accurately
The park’s Founders Redwood Groves historical interpretation acknowledges that some early conservation figures associated with grove names also advocated eugenics and discriminatory ideas. State Parks has worked with partners on interpretation that includes these troubling parts of the record instead of presenting historical figures uncritically.
The park itself grew through public advocacy, state investment and land conservation efforts over many decades. Its protected redwood forests are connected to the South Fork Eel River watershed.
