TWAIN HARTE, Tuolumne County — The Highway 108 corridor northeast of Twain Harte provides access to mountain recreation, including Pinecrest Lake. Visitors in mid-October should distinguish year-round public forest lands from services that close or change with the season.

The Stanislaus National Forest describes Pinecrest as part of its Summit Ranger District recreation area. A Forest Service guide places the lake about 30 miles east of Sonora, reached from Highway 108 near the community of Pinecrest.

Lake trail and boating rules

The Forest Service’s Pinecrest Lake Basin Recreation Complex brochure describes a four-mile trail around the lake. The guide states that boat speeds are limited to 20 mph in general areas, reduced to 5 mph near the marina, boat dock and swimming areas. Personal jet skis are not permitted.

The lake is a managed reservoir, and routes, water levels and services can change. A brochure describing standard operations is not proof that launch facilities or boat rentals are open today.

When do seasonal campgrounds close?

The Forest Service says developed campgrounds and the day-use complex typically begin seasonal operations around the last Saturday in April and remain open until approximately mid-October. The actual closure date is not fixed. People planning to camp should confirm which facilities are open and whether bookings or separate charges apply.

Current route and fire conditions

For travel into higher elevations, the Summit Ranger District advises visitors to check current road conditions by calling 209-965-3434. Also consult Caltrans QuickMap for Highway 108 restrictions. Snow, falling trees, wildfire closures or planned roadwork can disrupt recreation even when conditions in Twain Harte are mild.

Bring layers, food, water and an offline map. Stay on authorized trails and respect forest restrictions on fires and overnight camping. The Forest Service’s online district information is a better guide to current access than an old social-media photo.
