KIRKWOOD, Alpine and Amador Counties — Outdoor visitors heading to Carson Pass and the Mokelumne Wilderness near Kirkwood need to pay attention to a seasonal parking permit change that can catch travelers by surprise.

The U.S. Forest Service’s Mokelumne Wilderness guide describes standard summer parking fees at the Carson Pass and Meiss trailhead parking areas from June 1 through October 31. The brochure lists a $5 daily fee for applicable Forest Service-operated lots, with certain federal passes honored.

What happens November 1?

From November 1 through May 31, the same guide says visitors must follow the state’s California SNO-PARK permit system for parking at those designated winter lots. A summer fee receipt should not be treated as a valid winter permit.

Visitors should check the California SNO-PARK program for current costs, permit sellers, required display rules and any winter restrictions. A permit is for designated parking and is not a guarantee that travel conditions are safe or that spaces remain available.

Wilderness rules are separate from parking rules

The Forest Service reminds visitors that motorized and mechanized transportation is restricted inside federally designated wilderness. This includes ordinary bicycles, motor vehicles and other machinery not expressly authorized by law. Winter equipment and travel restrictions should be checked separately for the particular activity and trail.

Carson Pass lies along State Route 88 and can experience early-season snowfall, chain requirements and sudden changes in visibility. Drivers should consult Caltrans QuickMap before traveling. High-elevation hikers should prepare for a short day and carry an emergency communication plan.
