NILAND, Imperial County — Visitors approaching the Salton Sea from Niland should verify which state recreation facilities are operating before leaving home. A campground shown on an older travel map may no longer accept overnight visitors.

California State Parks’ Salton Sea State Recreation Area information lists Bombay Beach Campground as closed. The park also reports restrictions at other facilities, including Mecca Beach and Varner Harbor. These site-specific notices do not mean every public recreation area around the sea is closed.

Why shoreline access changes

Salton Sea water levels and exposed shoreline conditions have changed over time, affecting docks, ramps and recreational infrastructure. Weather, maintenance and environmental conditions can also lead to temporary restrictions.

Travelers should not assume that a historic boat ramp is usable or that a closed campground permits informal overnight stays. Respect posted barriers and consult the managing agency for current access.

Environmental questions

Exposed lakebed and windblown dust remain subjects of environmental monitoring. The Salton Sea Management Program provides information about habitat and dust suppression projects. Its published plans should not be mistaken for confirmation that a particular project is finished.

Check road conditions, carry water and verify day-use hours before heading into isolated shoreline areas. This guide describes agency notices, not current water quality or air measurements.
