COARSEGOLD, Madera County — Highway 41 is an important route from Coarsegold toward Yosemite National Park’s South Entrance. Travelers planning late-autumn or winter visits should understand that mountain driving conditions can differ sharply from the weather in the foothills.

The National Park Service’s winter visitor guidance explains that snow and ice can lead to tire-chain requirements on park roads, including for vehicles equipped with all-wheel or four-wheel drive. Restrictions depend on actual road and weather conditions.

What drivers should check

Use Caltrans QuickMap for State Route 41 outside the park and the Yosemite National Park conditions page for roads inside the boundary. The NPS road information number is 209-372-0200.

Mapping applications can recommend routes that are inappropriate in snow or temporarily closed. Follow posted signs and official directions instead of relying solely on the shortest predicted route.

What to pack

Carry appropriate chains, warm layers, water, snacks and a charged phone. Allow additional driving time and avoid unnecessary travel during winter storm warnings. Snow chains are a safety measure, not permission to travel on a closed road.
