CANBY, Modoc County — Rural communities depend on reliable official information when wildfire smoke, winter weather or highway disruptions affect travel. A useful first step is to distinguish emergency warnings from forecasts and road-status reports.
Where to find alerts
Visit Modoc County government for county emergency contacts and current public notices. The National Weather Service provides location-based watches, warnings and forecasts. For wildfire incidents, CAL FIRE’s incident page reports agency-managed fires, while other incidents may be managed by federal authorities.
Road conditions
Caltrans QuickMap is the state source for highway closures, chain restrictions and traffic hazards. County roads can have separate restrictions. In winter, a navigation app’s suggested route may be unsuitable for an ordinary car.
What households can do
Save emergency contact numbers offline, keep vehicle fuel and supplies available, and prepare a plan for livestock and pets. During smoke events, follow official air-quality guidance rather than assuming visibility alone reveals health risk. The AirNow map provides monitoring context but may not capture every rural microclimate.
