WARNER SPRINGS, San Diego County — Along County Highway S2, a historic ranch landscape tells part of the story of California’s early overland roads. The California Office of Historic Preservation lists Warner’s Ranch as California Historical Landmark No. 311.

A stop on a long journey

The state landmark entry traces ranch history to a nineteenth-century land grant and documents its role in the movement of travelers through Southern California. It says the first Butterfield stage stopped here October 6, 1858 as part of a route that connected Missouri and San Francisco. The landscape was used before that era by Indigenous people whose histories cannot be reduced to a transportation timeline.

What records are available?

The Library of Congress Historic American Buildings Survey has photographs, drawings and architectural documentation of the Warner Ranch house near San Felipe Road. These are important primary records for understanding the adobe building’s construction and conservation.

Historic designation is not a ticket

The state entry describes the landmark location on County Highway S2, approximately 0.7 mile east of Highway 79. It does not establish the ranch house as a permanently open, self-guided attraction. Anyone seeking to see the building should verify access, hours and permission with the current site operator rather than entering land without authorization.

How to read this history

Historical plaques often give prominence to settlers, military columns and mail routes. A fuller local history includes the experiences of the area’s Indigenous communities and the effects of colonization and land dispossession. Oral histories, tribal sources and documentary archives offer additional perspectives.
