CAMBRIA, California — Moonstone Beach is a familiar Central Coast destination, but the details of trail access, slopes and rules for dogs can make a big difference when planning a family walk or an accessible outing.

How long is the accessible boardwalk?

California State Parks’ accessibility inventory describes the Moonstone Boardwalk as an out-and-back accessible route approximately 0.96 mile each way. The accessible portion runs between the boat ramp near Leffingwell Landing and the entrance road to the Santa Rosa day-use area. The surface is wood, with benches and interpretive signs along the way.

The agency describes the path as generally flat, while also identifying intermittent sections with steeper grades. People planning to use mobility equipment should review the actual slope, surface and parking descriptions on the State Parks page before setting out. An accessibility listing is not a guarantee that conditions will be identical on every visit.

Can visitors bring dogs?

State Parks’ Hearst San Simeon State Park page permits dogs on leash along the Moonstone Beach Boardwalk, but notes that dogs are not permitted at some other park beaches and trails, including Leffingwell Landing. The rule can differ even between adjacent coastal access areas. Follow signs at each trail entrance and keep pets away from wildlife.

A second option for nature viewing

The same State Parks accessibility resource lists a roughly 0.4-mile accessible Elephant Seal Boardwalk near the Piedras Blancas rookery, farther north. The park says seal-viewing areas are available to visitors year-round without an admission fee, while specific nearby tour programs may have separate requirements. Elephant seals are wild animals; stay behind barriers, allow space and never approach them for photographs.

Before your coastal outing

  • Check ocean conditions and bring layers: coastal wind can change quickly.
  • Use established pathways to protect fragile bluff vegetation.
  • Read the posted dog and beach-access restrictions for each specific location.
  • For accessibility planning, consult the park’s published route measurements rather than assuming all coastal paths are equivalent.
