AUBURN, California — Auburn State Recreation Area stretches along the North and Middle Forks of the American River, with river access, steep canyon trails and recreation sites that operate under different rules. An especially useful local resource is California State Parks’ detailed accessibility information for the Quarry Trail.
Quarry Trail: a measured route, not just a ‘flat walk’
The State Parks accessibility inventory describes the Quarry Trail as an approximately 1.3-mile accessible segment in each direction, running beside the Middle Fork of the American River. The trail starts from a parking lot on the east side of Highway 49 south of Old Foresthill Road. It has a compacted-aggregate surface, with accessible parking at the trailhead and accessible restrooms at designated points.
The route is generally gradual, but portions reach steeper grades, and the return trip includes an uphill section. Visitors using wheelchairs or other mobility equipment should consult the full slope and surface measurements in the official accessibility inventory before setting out.
Lake Clementine has its own rules
According to the official Auburn State Recreation Area listing, some sites use different entry procedures or hours. Upper Lake Clementine has operated a peak-season weekend reservation system, with outside-peak access listed as first come, first served; weather and maintenance can affect access. The park explicitly says dogs are not allowed at Lake Clementine, even though leashed pets are permitted in many other parts of the recreation area.
The park’s advisory panel also identifies Yankee Jims closure information and golden mussel prevention measures. Restrictions may vary by road, trail, water access point and activity. Check the specific site rather than treating an alert as a closure of the entire recreation area.
River and canyon safety
Many routes descend into steep country, and conditions at the river can differ significantly from those in downtown Auburn. State Parks urges visitors to carry maps and drinking water, stay on established trails, prepare for hot weather, and avoid removing natural or historical material. Pets must be under control and leashed where allowed.
- Choose a specific trailhead before departure and download a map.
- Check site-specific notices, especially for Lake Clementine and Yankee Jims.
- Bring drinking water; the agency says potable water is not generally available within the recreation area.
- Avoid swimming or boating beyond your ability; moving river water presents hazards.
- For ranger or access questions, State Parks lists 530-885-4527.
