COLUMBIA, California — Visiting the Gold Rush-era streets of Columbia does not require an admission ticket to the state historic park. California State Parks identifies the town as an open-air historical destination, with museums, historic buildings and guided interpretation — but the hours for individual exhibits and businesses can vary.

What is free?

State Parks’ Columbia visitor guide lists general park admission and parking as free. Some special events, optional activities or lodging may charge separately. The park’s preserved streets are a rare opportunity to explore California history in a setting that reflects the Gold Rush period, although it remains important to distinguish restored exhibits from functioning modern businesses.

Fall and winter schedules

The official park overview says park exhibits generally operate 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from October 1 through April 30, with longer hours during warmer months. The park notes that exhibits close on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and most merchants follow their own hours, commonly around 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The separate visitor-guide page lists a museum schedule that may differ from the wider exhibit schedule. Anyone planning around a specific guided program, museum stop or group visit should check with the park rather than assume all facilities open and close together.

Museum and walking tours

The park recommends stopping at its museum and visitor interpretation exhibits. The visitor guide describes free guided walks, normally offered on weekends year-round at 11 a.m., subject to staff availability. Larger groups should make arrangements in advance. Call 209-588-9128 for park information and group visit questions.

What should families know?

  • General admission and parking are free, but optional activities can carry fees.
  • Historic buildings can have different operating schedules and access rules.
  • Dogs may be permitted in the outdoor park area but are not allowed inside historic buildings.
  • Check the calendar for educational events and confirm any group-tour arrangements.
  • Respect historical exhibits and ask staff before touching objects or entering closed structures.
