CARMEL VALLEY, California — Garland Ranch Regional Park offers riverbank paths, canyon trails and mountain views close to Carmel Valley homes. But access rules are not identical across all parts of the larger park. The Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District publishes a useful distinction between regular public trails and the Kahn Ranch section.
The main park is open for regular visitors
The Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District lists the main entrance at 700 West Carmel Valley Road, about 8.6 miles east of Highway 1. Visitors may enter the general Garland Ranch area without an access permit. Public access is limited to daylight hours; overnight use and camping are not permitted.
The park runs from the banks of the Carmel River through sycamore and oak woodland to higher trails in the Santa Lucia foothills. A variety of walking, hiking, bird-watching, equestrian and limited mountain-bike activities are offered on designated routes. Check the printed trail map and follow activity restrictions specific to the selected route.
Visitor Center hours
The district’s latest Visitor Center hours page lists the center as open Thursday through Monday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., including Monday holidays. It is closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. These are visitor-center hours, not the same as the park’s daylight-use access. The district provides 831-659-6065 as the Garland center contact on its park page.
Why Kahn Ranch is different
The Kahn Ranch permit conditions state that automobile entry via Hitchcock Canyon Road requires a valid permit, is available in daylight, and is limited to 10 vehicles per day. Visitors using that entrance must sign in. The district also imposes restrictions on bicycles and horses along Hitchcock Canyon Road, so the ordinary Garland Ranch rules cannot simply be copied across the adjoining access point.
Prepare before walking
- Select a marked trail using the park’s official route map; slopes differ substantially.
- Check whether your route starts at the main Garland entrance or Kahn Ranch.
- Carry water, particularly for sunny climbs above the river valley.
- Leave wildlife and historical resources untouched and pack out all waste.
- Keep pets under control under district rules and respect posted trail closures.
