BOULDER CREEK NEWS | SANTA CRUZ COUNTY | October 18, 2026. Drivers on Highway 9 in the San Lorenzo Valley should expect alternating one-way traffic control at several locations during the week of October 19–23. Caltrans’ October 15 construction update identifies multiple daytime and overnight projects, including work to replace the Kings Creek and San Lorenzo River bridges north of Boulder Creek.

The schedule affects different Highway 9 segments at different hours. It does not mean that all of Highway 9 is closed for the entire week, or that both bridges have already reopened.

Project map: Caltrans District 5 identifies the bridge replacement locations at Highway 9 post miles 13.6 and 15.5. The map shows project locations, not live lane closures. Official Caltrans project page.

What is being repaired near Boulder Creek?

Caltrans describes the San Lorenzo River Bridge Replacement Project at post miles 13.58–13.69 and the Kings Creek Bridge Replacement Project at post miles 15.41–15.55. Both involve full bridge replacement intended to improve safety for motorists and, when complete, pedestrians and bicyclists.

A separate lane restriction is scheduled near Ramona Drive at post miles 17.51–17.95. According to the state, approximately 0.4 mile of the northbound Highway 9 lane will be controlled from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, October 19, through Friday, October 23. One-way reversing traffic means opposing directions use a single open lane under flagger or signal control; motorists must wait for instructions before entering.

Additional Highway 9 work this week

  • October 19, 4–6 a.m.: one-way traffic control north of Graham Hill Road for concrete work, near post miles 6.4–7.6.
  • October 19–22, 9 p.m.–5 a.m.: utility and tree work at post miles 5.14–5.99.
  • October 19–20, 9 p.m.–5 a.m.: additional utility and tree operations at post miles 7.01–7.06.
  • October 19, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.: work at post miles 0.88–1.97.
  • October 20–23, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.: daytime work near post miles 23.37–23.53.

Those post-mile ranges cover different places in Santa Cruz County. They should not all be interpreted as work occurring within downtown Boulder Creek. The agency also reports that its Upper Highway 9 drainage and erosion-control improvements between Brookdale and Highway 236 are nearing completion; minor weekday activity may continue while materials are cleared.

A separate public meeting in Felton

Caltrans also identifies a Felton Pedestrian Safety Improvements town hall on Thursday, October 22, at 6:30 p.m. at the San Lorenzo Valley High School Performing Arts Center. That meeting concerns Felton’s pedestrian project, not the closure status of the northern Boulder Creek bridges.

What changes for residents?

Mountain communities depend heavily on Highway 9 for commuting, school travel, shopping and emergency access. Leave extra time, stay alert for flaggers, and avoid assuming a posted start or end hour is guaranteed in rainy or unsafe conditions. Use Caltrans QuickMap to confirm the latest closure report and the original schedule for the locations listed above.
