ARNOLD, California — Giant sequoias draw visitors from around the world to Calaveras Big Trees State Park, but for local families and people with limited mobility the question is more specific: which trails are suitable, how long are they, and what should visitors check first?

Two routes with published accessibility measurements

The California State Parks accessibility guide describes the North Grove Trail as a 1.7-mile loop beginning at the visitor center parking area. The trail runs through the giant-sequoia forest on compacted soil. It is generally gentle but has intermittent grades of about 5% to 8%. Accessible parking is provided near the visitor center.

For a shorter experience, the Three Senses Trail is listed as an approximately 0.13-mile accessible loop with interpretive information in English and Braille, plus places to rest. The access route reaches the trail approximately 500 feet along the North Grove Trail. State Parks notes that an alternate approach from a nearby parking area involves crossing a park road.

Accessibility does not mean identical conditions every day

Soil and boardwalk surfaces can become uneven, wet or slippery after rain or snow. The agency describes several other routes with slopes and crossings that may be challenging even where accessible facilities are provided. Before visiting, check official park notices and contact staff if mobility equipment, restrooms or designated parking are essential for the trip.

The park sits approximately four miles northeast of Arnold on Highway 4. State Parks lists 209-795-2334 as the park phone number. Park regulations allow dogs in campgrounds and on fire roads, not on the sequoia-grove hiking trails.

Plan for the season

  • Choose between the 1.7-mile North Grove route and shorter interpretive options.
  • Review slope information rather than selecting a trail by distance alone.
  • Check closures related to weather, prescribed burning or maintenance before traveling.
  • Bring layers and water, and protect tree roots by staying on established paths.
  • Do not collect cones, bark or other natural resources.
