ATWATER, California — An aviation museum beside Castle Airport gives Merced County residents and travelers a chance to explore military aircraft and aviation history without making a long trip to a major coastal city. For a good visit, it helps to know that ordinary museum admission and tours inside the Presidential VC-9 aircraft have different prices and schedules.

Location and ordinary museum hours

The Castle Air Museum’s official visitor guide lists the museum at 5050 Santa Fe Drive, Atwater, CA 95301, next to Castle Airport. Regular hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with the last aircraft-exhibit admission sold at 3:15 p.m. The museum advises visitors to call before traveling during inclement weather.

For navigation, drivers arriving via Highway 99 can follow the Merced–Atwater Expressway, Green Sands Avenue, Buhach Road and Santa Fe Drive as described on the museum’s own directions page. The campus includes outdoor aircraft exhibits, so walking conditions and weather affect how much of the collection you can comfortably see.

Prices by visitor category

The museum currently publishes general admission of $25 for adults ages 18–64, $20 for seniors 65+, $15 for children ages 6–17, and free admission for children under six accompanied by a paying adult. Active or retired military members and veterans are listed at $20. Prices can change; confirm before purchasing.

Group or school tours have different arrangements and normally require advance coordination. The museum gives 209-723-2182 for questions about group bookings.

What about the Presidential VC-9?

A separate guided visit allows guests to enter the former Presidential VC-9 aircraft. According to the museum, those tours usually take place on Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The current posted additional charge is $10 per person beyond general admission. The weekend schedule is not a guarantee that tours run during an individual visit; check with the museum.

Before taking the family

  • Check opening hours and weather conditions before leaving home.
  • Allow enough time to enter before the exhibit-admission cutoff.
  • Budget separately if planning the VC-9 add-on tour.
  • Ask about accessibility and the availability of tours for visitors with mobility restrictions.
  • Use official museum information rather than an outdated third-party ticket listing.
