BARSTOW NEWS | COMMUNITY REPORT · 2026
An extensive 2026 road maintenance effort included 24.31 miles of roadways in the Barstow area, according to a September 21 announcement from San Bernardino County Public Works. The work was part of a larger desert and mountain roadway-preservation program, not a separate full reconstruction of city streets.
The project at a glance
The county’s Main Street & Others project is listed at 24.31 miles. Across Barstow, Essex, Lucerne Valley and Angelus Oaks, crews treated 96.49 miles in four projects, with total program costs exceeding $8 million. The countywide budget should not be reported as the cost of Barstow’s particular portion.
What chip seal and scrub seal do
These surface treatments help protect pavement from deterioration, extending the useful life of roads before more expensive rehabilitation becomes necessary. They should not be confused with a completely rebuilt roadbed, widened highway or new sidewalks. Such differences matter when residents evaluate the quality of completed work.
Finding the right maintenance agency
Not every street with a Barstow postal address is maintained by the same government. County Public Works is responsible for county-maintained segments, while municipal roadways may be under a different program. If a problem remains near a treated route, report the exact address or coordinates and determine which agency maintains it.
Next questions for public oversight
Residents can request the completed project map, exact road segments, maintenance warranties and follow-up inspection findings. The county release confirms project completion at the program level; it does not independently describe the condition of every driveway access, crossing or shoulder.
