BIG PINE NEWS | LOCAL PUBLIC-INTEREST REPORT • OCTOBER 2026
Big Pine is the subject of a 2026 CAL FIRE proposal to lower wildfire hazards along streams and nearby uplands. A September 3 Notice of Exemption outlines treatment across approximately 19 acres of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power property in Inyo County.
What the official documents show
The Big Pine Riparian Resilience Project follows priorities identified in the CAL FIRE San Bernardino–Inyo–Mono Unit Fire Plan and Inyo County Community Wildfire Protection Plan. The agency describes manual removal of selected streamside vegetation, possible follow-up herbicide use and mechanical treatment in adjacent uplands. Work would be kept out of wetted channels. Large downed woody material could remain where feasible or be redistributed to reduce concentrated fuel.
Why this matters locally
Dense riparian growth can both provide valuable habitat and become a route for flames when vegetation dries. The project therefore raises questions about how protection of vegetation and wildlife will be balanced with emergency preparedness. A state environmental filing is not proof that work on all 19 acres is complete or that future fires can be stopped.
What residents can watch next
Big Pine News will track treatment boundaries, dates, any chemical-use controls, implementation and monitoring. Residents can seek maps and completion reports from CAL FIRE and provide documented community observations.
