BRENTWOOD NEWS | 2026 LOCAL NEWS
Brentwood began implementing a traffic-management pilot along American Avenue ahead of the 2026 school year to address congestion and potential conflicts during drop-off and pickup at Adams Middle School and Heritage High School. The city announced the changes July 17 after coordinating with both schools.
What city crews planned to change
The pilot uses flexible delineators to guide traffic through the corridor, adjustments to pedestrian crossings and added red-curb areas to clarify parking restrictions. It also removes some bike lanes to provide additional curbside parking during peak school periods and adds pedestrian-crossing warning signs near the Heritage High traffic signal.
Why this is a pilot and not necessarily the final street layout
City officials said they would monitor operations and gather feedback throughout the school year to assess the changes. That matters because removal of bike lanes and reassignment of curb space may affect students who bike as well as drivers looking for parking. The city’s stated goal is better circulation and safety, but the eventual outcome needs observations and data.
What the July schedule meant
The city anticipated completing most roadway changes before the first day of school, although some signal work could follow later due to equipment delivery. The announcement therefore should not be read as a certified completion report for every sign or signal as of October.
Questions for families and neighbors
Residents can ask how pedestrian and bicycle movements are measured, whether waiting or loading problems have shifted to nearby streets, and how the pilot will be evaluated before becoming permanent. Brentwood News will follow published results and official adjustments rather than assume that a new layout is automatically safer for everyone.
