BURNEY NEWS | 2026 LOCAL REPORTING

California State Parks filed a February 2026 plan to reduce fire hazards in approximately 90 acres of McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. The project focuses on vegetation management near campgrounds, access roads and visitor facilities so those areas may be more defensible and evacuation routes may function better during a wildfire.

Where fuel work is proposed

The park identifies three work areas. Approximately 34 acres surround an access road to Pioneer Cemetery and a secondary connection toward Highway 89. The plan describes a 300-foot-long fuel-break section connecting Lake Britton and Pioneer Campground and vegetation work along a service road used for potential secondary evacuation.

Pioneer Campground and the entrance

Another roughly 23 acres along the east boundary of Pioneer Campground would receive vegetation treatment in a 400-foot strip to reduce exposure to nearby fire. The third area, around 33 acres, includes the park entrance, service yard, residences, concessions, visitor center and related facilities; vegetation reduction there is intended to support the primary access and escape corridor.

Selective thinning rather than clearing the whole forest

The environmental notice characterizes the work as selective thinning, not widespread removal of mature scenic trees. Treatments may reduce ladder fuels and dense brush while preserving healthier vegetation. The agency cited existing-facility maintenance and limited land alteration exemptions under CEQA. That filing does not prove the full 90 acres have already been treated.

Questions for park neighbors and visitors

People who live or work near Burney Falls can request the final treatment map, seasonal work dates, access restrictions, fire-safety protocols and the maintenance plan for regrowth. A reduced fuel load may aid preparedness but does not eliminate wildfire risk. Burney News will distinguish completed on-the-ground treatment from proposals and funding approvals.
