DEATH VALLEY NEWS | PARK ROADS | OCTOBER 2026
A temporary return of vehicle access to one of Death Valley’s signature backcountry routes has ended. The National Park Service announced September 28 that Titus Canyon Road would close on October 2, 2026, to begin additional repairs after years of flood damage.
The damage behind the closure
Flash floods damaged Titus Canyon in August 2022, with further flooding in 2023. Preliminary work moved boulders, filled damaged sections and graded the road, allowing a temporary reopening earlier in 2026. That work was not the end of the restoration: the current phase is designed to make the route more durable during future storms.
Where construction will focus
The park plans improvements to drainage, erosion protection and wash crossings. Work near Red Pass includes stabilizing a vulnerable stretch with steep drop-offs and rockfall hazards. Crews also plan measures that redirect stormwater away from the roadway. The park expects this phase to continue through May 2027, subject to conditions.
What visitors should not assume
The closure is not simply a temporary traffic delay; visitors should not attempt to drive into the closed one-way section or bypass barricades. Dates can shift, so the construction forecast should not be treated as a guaranteed reopening. A trip that depends on Titus Canyon should be re-planned around official park access information.
The local significance
Backcountry routes help shape how visitors distribute across Death Valley and where tourism activity occurs. Restoring safe access matters for park users, tour operators and the long-term protection of a fragile landscape. Death Valley News will track the difference between repair announcements, actual reopening orders and any new restrictions.
