EL PORTAL, Mariposa County — Drivers approaching Yosemite Valley through El Portal use the Highway 140 corridor, a route that the National Park Service describes as an entry to Yosemite throughout the year. But a road’s normal seasonal status does not guarantee an absence of work zones or unexpected delays.
Yosemite’s official basic information says the park is open every day of the year, with western approaches on Highways 41, 140 and 120. The current conditions page identifies the continuation of Highway 140 inside the park as El Portal Road and provides a live reference point for closures or lane controls.
How El Portal differs from higher mountain approaches
Unlike Tioga Road across the Sierra crest, which normally closes for months in snow season, Highway 140 typically remains available as a lower-elevation western route into Yosemite Valley. Heavy storms, debris, rockfall, roadwork or other incidents can nevertheless interrupt access temporarily.
Visitors should call 209-372-0200, choosing the road-conditions prompts, shortly before driving. The National Park Service cautions that GPS applications do not always provide accurate directions within the park.
What about Yosemite visitor facilities?
The Yosemite Valley Welcome Center is listed as open year-round, generally 9 a.m.–5 p.m., with visitor information and access to other park services. It is not located in El Portal itself. Travelers need to plan additional driving time from the park entrance to the valley, plus parking and shuttle logistics.
The NPS traffic guide warns that parking areas can fill and valley travel may take significantly longer during busy periods.
Four checks before leaving
- Review current road closures and planned work at the official NPS conditions page.
- Check Caltrans QuickMap for Highway 140 outside the park.
- Allow time for visitor-center services and a possible shuttle connection.
- Do not assume a reservation is required or unnecessary based on another year’s regulations; read the current NPS entry rules.
El Portal is both a residential community and a gateway used by Yosemite visitors. Avoid blocking roads and driveways while stopping to take pictures or look at maps.
