CALIFORNIA58 | TECHNOLOGY, FAMILY FINANCES & CALIFORNIA | OCTOBER 19, 2026. Elon Musk said Monday that he intends to give one share of SpaceX stock to every child in America in 2027, a sweeping promise that could involve more than 70 million young people and billions of dollars in company shares. The announcement is real, but the shares have not yet been distributed and no application process has been announced.
In an October 19 post on X, Musk wrote: “Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America.” He also indicated that he envisioned additional gifts. The pledge was independently reported by The Associated Press, Axios and TechCrunch.
How much might one SpaceX share be worth?
SpaceX went public in June 2026, making the company’s shares available on the stock market. Its stock closed at $146.03 on Friday, October 16, according to AP and Axios. If roughly 72 million children received one share at that price, the aggregate market value would be approximately $10.5 billion. Using a slightly larger estimate of the child population produces a total near $10.7 billion. These are illustrations based on a dated stock price—not a cash commitment at a guaranteed value.
A share is ownership in a company, not a $146 check. Its market price can rise or fall. Families might face rules governing custodial ownership, transfer, sale or taxation, depending on the eventual structure. Musk has not disclosed those terms.
Which children would qualify?
That is one of the most important unanswered questions. Musk said “every kid in America,” but as of October 19 he had not publicly defined an age cutoff, citizenship or residency requirements, the reference date for eligibility or how the shares would reach children. It is therefore premature to claim that a particular child has already qualified—or that parents can sign up now.
It is also unclear whether the gift would be made directly to children, through custodial brokerage accounts, through existing government-supported accounts or through another structure. Headlines about the pledge should not be confused with published terms and conditions, which have not been announced.
What could this mean for children in California?
California has a particularly large stake in the question. The U.S. Census Bureau’s QuickFacts for California lists a population of about 39.4 million in 2025, of whom 20.8% were under age 18. That suggests roughly eight million California children could potentially fall within the general group Musk described, if his eventual rules cover all minors in the state. It is not an official eligibility estimate.
For California parents, the practical questions will be whether children who are not U.S. citizens qualify, whether children without Social Security numbers can participate, who legally holds the stock before age 18, whether families need to open accounts, and whether any fees apply. There are no confirmed answers in Musk’s brief announcement.
Are these the same as Trump Accounts?
No. They should be treated as separate announcements unless an official connection is established. Trump Accounts are an existing tax-advantaged account framework for eligible children. The Internal Revenue Service explains that an authorized adult can elect to establish an account for a child younger than 18 with a valid Social Security number. The federal program’s separate $1,000 pilot contribution has more restrictive conditions: the child must be a U.S. citizen with a valid Social Security number and born from January 1, 2025, through December 31, 2028.
Some reporting has discussed Trump Accounts as a possible vehicle for distributing Musk’s shares. But Musk has not published a definitive distribution mechanism. An IRS account application is not currently an application to receive the announced SpaceX share. Families should not confuse federal pilot-program eligibility with the scope of Musk’s much broader statement.
Why did Musk announce the plan now?
The promise followed a separate announcement from artificial intelligence company Anthropic that it intends to commit a portion of its equity to a public-benefit fund. Musk responded publicly that he favored distributing shares directly to people, before posting his plan for SpaceX. These events provide context for the timing, but they do not establish that the stock transfer has been funded, scheduled or administratively approved.
Should families register, pay a fee or provide personal information?
Not on the basis of this announcement. California58 found no application link, eligibility portal or verified enrollment instructions in Musk’s October 19 pledge. Unsolicited social-media messages promising “free SpaceX shares” in exchange for an upfront payment, brokerage password, identification document or cryptocurrency transfer should be treated cautiously. For any future announcement, start with verified company and government communications rather than forwarded links.
What happens next?
The proposal will become more concrete only if Musk or SpaceX explains who qualifies, how the shares would be transferred, what legal and tax arrangements apply and when transfers will actually begin in 2027. For now, the confirmed news is the promise itself—not a completed giveaway. We will update this article if official rules or confirmed distribution arrangements emerge.
What changes for California residents? No immediate application or payment step has been announced. Parents who are interested should monitor trusted sources, distinguish the Musk pledge from the separate federal Trump Accounts pilot and avoid financial decisions based on an assumed $146 guaranteed benefit.
