GEORGETOWN NEWS | ORIGINAL LOCAL NEWS · OCTOBER 2026
El Dorado County approved an environmental addendum for the Georgetown Broadband Fiber Project on September 29, 2026, according to the Notice of Determination filed October 1. The proposal would install about 27.87 miles of new underground broadband infrastructure across roads and easements in the unincorporated Georgetown area.
What the public documents establish
The official record places the new fiber in previously disturbed rights-of-way and existing easements rather than describing a new highway or a series of tower sites. The county relied on its earlier broadband program Environmental Impact Report and issued an addendum for the Georgetown-specific section. The public document does not describe aboveground broadband equipment for this project.
Why this matters locally
The corridor may support better telecommunications options, but a route approval is not an offer of internet service to every home. Residents should distinguish underground network installation from network activation and the later work needed to reach an individual address. Georgetown’s dispersed settlement pattern makes that distinction especially important.
