GUALALA NEWS | WILDFIRE PREPAREDNESS | OCTOBER 2026 — A forest-resilience project is planned on land associated with the Gualala Arts Center, according to an October 6 filing from the Mendocino County Resource Conservation District. The proposal focuses on approximately four acres of wooded grounds around a cultural venue used by residents and visitors.
Which treatments are planned?
The North Bay Forest Improvement Program project calls for selective removal of small-diameter trees and competing vegetation, pruning of lower limbs and treatment of resulting slash through pile burning. The proposal aims to lower surface and ladder fuel levels while keeping healthy mature trees and supporting desirable native plants.
Environmental precautions
The district says the treatments follow a forest management plan prepared by a registered professional forester. Project-specific best management practices are intended to safeguard streams, wildlife and sensitive resources. These safeguards matter in the wooded coastal landscape, where vegetation both contributes to fire risk and provides habitat.
What has not yet happened?
The state Notice of Exemption describes a treatment plan and its environmental determination. It does not establish that crews have completed the full four-acre area, that smoke will be present on a given day, or that the Arts Center has closed. Any schedule or changes to events should be confirmed with the venue and responsible land managers.
