GUSTINE NEWS | ORIGINAL LOCAL NEWS · OCTOBER 2026
Merced County filed a March 5, 2026 determination for a proposal to replace the Cottonwood Road Bridge over Outside Canal, approximately half a mile east of Orchard Road near Gustine. The existing bridge has been identified as structurally deficient, and officials propose replacing it with a structure meeting current design standards.
What the official documents say
The state record identifies Bridge No. 39C-0114 and describes removal of the existing crossing and construction of a replacement capable of carrying current legal and permitted vehicle loads. The project would require closing part of Cottonwood Road during work, with a detour of approximately six miles under the proposed construction plan.
Why residents should follow it
A closed rural crossing can create substantial extra travel for farms, local businesses, school transportation and emergency services. The county’s filing establishes environmental and project decisions, but not that construction has started or that the six-mile detour is already active. Residents need current road notices before changing their routes.
Next steps for the community
Gustine News will monitor contractor selection, work dates, detour maps, emergency access and final bridge opening. People using the area should verify active restrictions through Merced County rather than older project documents.
