HERLONG, Lassen County — Sierra Army Depot has been one of the institutions shaping Herlong since World War II. The installation dates to 1942, but its present mission extends beyond the original wartime munitions storage role.
What does the depot do today?
The depot’s official website identifies its mission as receiving, storing, repairing and redistributing equipment in support of Army and Department of Defense readiness. Its public overview describes more than 36,000 acres of high-desert land and a specialized role in long-term materiel sustainment.
The Army’s TACOM industrial-base guide designates Sierra Army Depot a Center for Industrial and Technical Excellence for petroleum and water systems. It also describes equipment reset, operational stocks and redistribution of vehicles and protective equipment.
What does that mean for residents?
The work supports a distinct local labor market involving technical trades, heavy equipment, mechanics, logistics and government support occupations. However, a general mission description is not a current job listing. Applicants should verify individual vacancies and qualifications through USAJOBS or the Army’s official recruiting channels.
Separating published history from current projects
An Army Corps of Engineers history describes a past drinking-water project involving the installation and neighboring community. That historical report is important context but should not be confused with a finding about today’s drinking-water compliance or a newly announced project.
For Herlong residents, a useful accountability question is which public contracts, environmental documents and workforce programs presently affect the depot. Official agency records provide a starting point; restricted installations are not ordinary public visitor sites.
