The Amador County Unified School District began environmental review in 2026 of a major school consolidation proposal affecting six schools on five campuses. Ione Junior High School is one of the campuses where the district proposes physical construction rather than only operational changes.
What the official documents describe
The August 28 state filing proposes a new building with up to four classrooms totaling approximately 4,500 square feet on the northern side of the Ione campus. The district also describes age-appropriate playground features and a separate kindergarten pick-up and drop-off loop. Parking would be restriped to increase capacity from 20 spaces to 68 within the existing paved footprint.
Why this matters to residents
The consolidation plan also contemplates changes to junior-high and high-school boundaries, which could alter school journeys for families beyond the construction site. The filing anticipates later work and does not mean the new building is already available for students in October 2026. Any school changes depend on approval, implementation and final schedules.
What to watch next
Ione News will track school-board decisions, the environmental review, enrollment-zone maps, construction budgets and how temporary pick-up arrangements could affect surrounding streets. Families should check district notices for actual assignments and upcoming school-year calendars.
