KNIGHTS FERRY, Stanislaus County — People traveling to Knights Ferry to walk the historic covered bridge should know that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers still lists the bridge as closed for extensive repairs. Other public recreation areas along the Stanislaus River remain part of the area’s visitor opportunities, subject to posted restrictions.
On its Stanislaus River Parks page, the Army Corps carries the bridge closure notice originally issued in December 2022. The agency says the closure should not prevent visitors from exploring the other developed recreation sites under its management.
What can visitors see instead?
Knights Ferry has a visitor center with displays about the river, the covered bridge, salmon life cycles, Native American history and a historic flour mill. The broader river parks system includes short nature trails, picnic sites and regulated opportunities for boating, fishing and wildlife viewing.
The Corps advises checking river conditions before a boating trip. Flows may change for operational reasons, and a navigable river is not inherently safe for every swimmer, paddler or group. Visitors should understand their equipment and water conditions.
Fire restrictions remain scheduled through October
A June 1, 2026 Corps notice sets fire restrictions in effect June 1 through October 31 at Stanislaus River Parks sites. During that period, the agency says only white gas is permitted for cooking fires; wood and charcoal fires are prohibited. Other site rules and emergency fire restrictions may also apply.
The responsible project office lists 209-881-3517 for questions. Travelers should confirm current restrictions before planning a cookout or gathering because conditions can produce additional changes.
Why an old closure notice still matters
The covered bridge is a major historic landmark and an important symbol of the community, but the presence of the bridge on tourist maps does not imply it is open to cross. Visitors should obey barriers until the managing agency announces a reopening. California58 has not found a verified public reopening notice for this article.
