MENDOCINO, Mendocino County — State parks along the Mendocino coast have announced volunteer hosting opportunities supporting visitor information and historic interpretation beginning November 2026.
The California State Parks campground and park host recruitment page lists opportunities with the nonprofit MendoParks starting November 1, 2026, including work at the Ford House Visitor Center in Mendocino Headlands State Park, MacKerricher and Van Damme visitor centers.
What would volunteers do?
According to the recruitment notice, visitor-center hosts may help with interpretive information, guided house visits, gift shop transactions, light housekeeping and special events. A host may be asked to assist at more than one participating visitor center rather than serving only in the town of Mendocino.
The listing describes host sites at the California State Parks Mendocino District yard at Russian Gulch State Park, with water, electric and sewer connections in exchange for approximately 25 hours of volunteer work per week. Eligibility and exact host-site requirements should be confirmed before applying.
Why the Ford House matters
The historic Ford House on Main Street serves as a visitor and interpretive center for Mendocino Headlands State Park. The state park’s Mendocino Area Parks Association information describes local history materials and interpretive videos on topics ranging from migrating gray whales to logging-era life.
Jerome B. Ford had the residence built in 1854. Its history is connected with Mendocino’s nineteenth-century timber economy, a story that today helps visitors understand how the coastal settlement developed.
How to inquire
The State Parks host listing gives director@mendoparks.org and tracy.weisberg@parks.ca.gov as contacts for more information. Applicants should confirm whether the host positions remain available, whether RV accommodation is suitable and what duties or training are required.
Park volunteering is distinct from paid employment. A publicly listed opportunity does not mean an application has been accepted or that every advertised site remains vacant.
