SAN FRANCISCO NEWS | TRANSPORTATION | October 18, 2026. San Francisco drivers traveling toward the Peninsula should be aware of a major closure at US-101’s Hospital Curve. Caltrans scheduled all southbound lanes and one northbound lane to close between Cesar Chavez Street and 17th Street from 11 p.m. Friday, October 16, until 6 a.m. Monday, October 19. The work is part of a freeway paving and rehabilitation program, not a new crash-related closure.

The agency’s October 9 advisory identifies this as the third full closure weekend for the project. Drivers should check Caltrans QuickMap for actual current conditions. A scheduled closure is not, by itself, live verification that every lane is closed at the moment someone reads this story.

Which way is affected?

  • Southbound US-101: all through lanes closed in the specified Hospital Curve section during the announced weekend work.
  • Northbound US-101: one northbound lane closed; the remaining two lanes are scheduled to stay open.
  • Westbound I-80 to northbound US-101: connector closure is included in Caltrans’ project advisory.
  • Published reopen time: Monday, October 19, at 6 a.m., subject to field conditions.

Caltrans urges people to avoid the southbound work area and use southbound I-280 or another appropriate route. Drivers should not assume that an unfamiliar residential street is a suitable detour. Follow highway signs, official traffic directions and current traffic reports, particularly if driving a commercial vehicle.

Why a second closure matters now

Caltrans has also scheduled another full weekend closure from Friday, November 6, at 11 p.m. until Monday, November 9, at 6 a.m. The agency describes the November work as the fourth and final weekend closure in this stage, weather permitting. The November event was rescheduled from October 2–5; outdated screenshots may therefore give the wrong date.

These closures support pavement repairs that began in fall 2025. Caltrans says the work is meant to extend roadway life, improve ride quality and provide structural safety improvements. The agency has a broader set of rehabilitation projects, including I-280 and 19th Avenue, but those are separate projects with their own dates.

What changes for residents?

Anyone driving to the airport, employment sites, medical appointments or other destinations south of the city should allow additional time and verify the final lane status just before departing. Neighborhood streets near Cesar Chavez and the interchange may experience more traffic when drivers choose alternate routes.
