SMITH RIVER, Del Norte County — Visitors planning a trip to Tolowa Dunes State Park on the far northern California coast should note a distinction between access for a daytime walk and the status of overnight camping.
California State Parks’ official park page states that the park is open for day use year-round from sunrise to sunset, but that its campground is closed until further notice. This is a significant detail for visitors who may see older descriptions of primitive campsites still circulating online.
Dune restoration dates
The park’s events list includes a Big Dune Restoration event for October 18, 2026, followed by listings for November 15 and December 20. Activities, volunteer eligibility and meeting locations should be checked directly with State Parks before traveling; an event listing does not mean participation can occur without any registration or direction.
Why these dunes are ecologically important
Tolowa Dunes contains beaches, rivers, wetlands, old dune ridges and wooded areas. State Parks describes it as an important stopover along the Pacific Flyway for migratory birds. Nearby Lake Earl and the Smith River support a variety of aquatic habitats, and the park’s cultural landscape is closely linked to Tolowa people.
Protection can involve restricting access to sensitive areas and restoring vegetation; visitors should use authorized routes rather than cut across dunes where restoration work is underway.
Pets and safety
The official park page lists no dogs. Travelers should not assume policies from other California coastal parks apply here. State Parks lists its information telephone as 707-464-6101.
Coastal fog, rain and wind can affect visibility and trail conditions. A sunrise-to-sunset day-use rule also means no overnight parking or camping just because a beach appears accessible. Check posted signs for any temporary restrictions.
