THREE RIVERS, Tulare County — Travelers approaching Sequoia National Park through Three Rivers should account for seasonal visitor center hours and the winding stretch of Highway 198 beyond the Ash Mountain entrance.

The National Park Service lists the Foothills Visitor Center at 47050 Generals Highway, Three Rivers, approximately one mile beyond the Ash Mountain entrance. For the period shown as October 13 through May 19, the agency lists daily operating hours of 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., subject to weather, emergency and operational changes.

Why stop before driving farther into Sequoia?

Foothills is an important information stop for visitors using the southern park entrance. Visitors can pick up maps, obtain information about the road ahead and use available restrooms and other amenities. The park’s Foothills planning page describes it as the district’s visitor center before the drive toward Giant Forest.

For visitors unfamiliar with the Sierra Nevada, arriving at the entrance is not the same as reaching the giant sequoia groves. The mountain road climbs steeply, with tight turns and significant elevation changes. Driving times can be much longer than a map’s mileage suggests.

Important guidance for RVs and trailers

According to the park’s directions and transportation information, Highway 198 enters the park at Three Rivers. The National Park Service advises against vehicles longer than 24 feet between Foothills Visitor Center and Potwisha Campground, and longer than 22 feet between Potwisha and Giant Forest Museum.

Those restrictions are route advisories, not a blanket statement that all oversized vehicles are barred everywhere in the parks. Travelers with long RVs or trailers should review the current NPS vehicle-length guidance and consider other appropriate entrances rather than trusting a navigation app alone.

Check conditions before a fall or winter trip

  • Road conditions: inspect the NPS road information page shortly before traveling.
  • Weather: mountain roads may face snow, ice, tire-chain requirements or emergency closures even when conditions are mild in Three Rivers.
  • Visitor center hours: confirm hours directly because posted schedules can change.
  • Fuel and supplies: plan for long distances between services; don’t assume that a park route has the same amenities as a city highway.

Three Rivers serves as a gateway community for travelers who need lodging, food and information. Taking time to plan the actual mountain route protects both visitors and the emergency responders who serve the area.
