TRES PINOS, San Benito County — Visitors heading to Pinnacles National Park from the Tres Pinos area should know that a cave advertised in a hiking guide may not be open in its entirety. National Park Service status updates distinguish multiple cave sections, each affected differently by wildlife protection and seasonal conditions.
The park’s current cave status page lists the lower portion of Bear Gulch Cave as open, the upper portion as closed, and Balconies Cave as open. The page was last updated in August 2026; changes can occur without a scheduled notice because of flooding, rockfall, vandalism, or bat activity.
Why does Bear Gulch have separate rules?
The NPS says Bear Gulch Cave provides important roosting and maternity habitat for Townsend’s big-eared bats. The cave has been divided so people may pass through its lower portion during much of the year while sensitive bat areas remain protected.
According to the park, the upper cave can remain closed for long periods to avoid disturbance during bat breeding, rearing and hibernation. A visitor reaching a closed section must turn around or use an authorized alternative route, not enter through barriers.
Check the date of the information
Cave status can be affected by recent storms, changes in water levels, rockfall and wildlife movements. A social-media photo showing someone inside a cave last month is no guarantee of access today.
The Pinnacles Conditions page also lists climbing and wildfire-related restrictions. In July 2026 the park reported very high fire danger with specific limitations on wood and charcoal fires; travelers should verify current restrictions before lighting cooking equipment or entering a closed area.
Where should visitors enter the park?
Pinnacles has separate eastern and western entrances, with no connecting road inside the park. East-side routes serve Bear Gulch, while the west side provides access to different trailheads. For a specific cave hike, study the official entrance directions and the park map first.
Travelers should carry water, sturdy footwear and lighting appropriate to authorized cave routes. Staff can advise on conditions and whether a cave trail is suitable for children or mobility needs. The general park information number is 831-389-4486.
