WEED NEWS | RURAL BROADBAND · OCTOBER 2026
A California Public Utilities Commission filing dated August 13, 2026 identifies a broadband project proposed by Siskiyou Telephone Company to serve 417 currently unserved locations in Siskiyou and Humboldt counties. The CPUC says the project is eligible for up to $2,299,633 in California Advanced Services Fund infrastructure support. Weed is among the communities named for the plan.
What technology would be used?
The proposed system combines fiber-to-the-home and fixed wireless connections. The state describes planned fiber capability of up to 2.5 gigabits per second for downloads and uploads. Wireless connections are described as potentially reaching download speeds of 500 megabits per second and uploads of 100 megabits per second. Actual household speeds depend on design, equipment, network operation and service conditions.
Where is the project proposed?
The filing names Weed, Carrick, Lake Shastina, Grenada, Yreka and Somes Bar as locations or service areas. The project spans portions of two counties and includes both last-mile connection and network infrastructure. It does not say that every property in Weed will be connected or that all 417 locations fall within the city.
What is not yet confirmed?
A state determination that a proposed project is eligible for funding is not a completion report. The public notice does not establish that the entire network has been built, that a specific home qualifies, or that a provider has started taking orders at every listed address. Pricing, eligibility and installation timelines should be confirmed with the operator.
Why this matters
For rural Northern California communities, reliable internet connections can improve access to education, commerce, health information and emergency communications. Weed News will continue to follow construction milestones, available service maps and the final number of premises connected rather than rely only on proposed network capacity.
